The Story of the Art

As we were walking, my companion pointed to this little shop. I did a double-take and then I took two photos. I met Russell Frost, a New Zealander (Hooksmith.com), and with his platen press, he created the artwork for X SQUARES using the Granby/Johnston typeface most well-known as the font of the London Underground and Volkswagen, circa 1915. The fun part was watching Russell print the artwork, at which time we discovered that the outline of the Capital X had never been inked before this day. Watch his video here, and stop by to chat at 54 Church Road, Leytonstone, on a weekend when you’re in London.
